Cutting: Understanding and Overcoming Self-Mutilation. Steven Levenkron. W.W. Norton, 1998. Parents, teachers, youth workers and anyone in contact with teens must read this book. It is extremely informative on a subject many know little about and, most importantly, provides helpful information on how to reach out to those who cut.

This book includes real life stories of hurting teens so that readers can understand the root causes of their heartache and begin to understand the proper response.

 

 

 

A Bright Red Scream: Self-Mutilation and the Language of Pain. Marilee Strong. Viking, 1998. An overview of the growing problem of self-injurious behavior (cutting) in today's youth culture. The first-person accounts offer good insight into the problem.

 

 

 

 

Adolescents at Risk: Prevalence and Prevention. Joy Dryfoos. Oxford University Press, 1990. A comprehensive study and compendium of the latest research focusing on four key areas: delinquency, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and school failure. A valuable reference guide.

 

 

 

 

All Grown Up and No Place to Go: Teenagers in Crisis. David Elkind. Addison-Wesley, 1984. A classic on contemporary family life. Looks at stresses in culture on teenagers and their families. "Family Permutations" is a particularly insightful chapter about the struggles of teenagers in some various family situations.

 

 

 

 

Helping Teens in Crisis. Miriam Neff. Tyndale, 1993. Practical suggestions from a Christian counselor for prevention and intervention in the home.

Ballantine, 1995. Written by a clinical psychologist, this valuable book sheds light on the unique problems facing teenage girls in the 90's.
